Health and Safety in the Workplace: what your employer should be doing


Health and Safety Laws impose strict duties on employers to take care for the safety of their employees. In particular, employers should:

  • Ensure that your work must be carried out in a safe way. Your employer must assess the risks involved with your job, this includes the materials and equipment that you use and the way in which you carry out your duties.
  • Ensure that you are properly trained. Your employer must risk assess your jobs and make sure that you are properly trained to carry them out. If your job involves particular risks (such as lifting) or if you work with potentially harmful substances,  then you must be told how to minimise the dangers that these risks pose to you.
  • Ensure that your workplace is safe. They must make sure that your office, factory or another place of work is generally safe. Floors should not be left wet and should be free from slipping and tripping hazards, such as files, boxes, and cables.
  • Ensure that you are given suitable equipment. They must give you equipment which is safe and suitable for the job that you are doing. You must also be told how to use it correctly. The equipment must also be regularly inspected and properly maintained. Work equipment is a broad term that can cover anything from a forklift in a warehouse or production line through to computers, desks, and chairs.
  • Provide you with competent fellow employees. Your work colleagues must be competent and trained to do their jobs.  If a colleague caused you injury as a result of being incompetent then your employer is potentially liable for their actions.
